Overview

The Supe Nal Gopya Ghat Trek is a lesser-known but scenic monsoon trail located in the Western Ghats near Supe village in Pune district, Maharashtra. This hidden gem offers a raw and offbeat experience, perfect for trekkers looking to explore untouched Sahyadri beauty.

Gopya Ghat: A narrow and historic mountain pass locally referred to as “Nal” — meaning slit or gorge — known for its sharp cut between two vertical rock walls

The Supe Nal to Gopya Ghat Trek is a captivating journey through the dense, untouched forests in the Rajgad region of the Sahyadris. This ancient route, once a vital connection between the inland villages and the Konkan town of Shivthar, echoes with historical significance. Gopya Ghat, in particular, was once a major passage in the Western Ghats, as evident from the remnants of old rock-cut caves, water cisterns, and stone pathways carved into the hillside — silent witnesses to the ghat’s once-flourishing past. The trek begins from Supe village, where the narrow valley known as Supe Nalintroduces trekkers to a gorge-like passageway framed by high ridges and vibrant foliage. During the monsoon, the path comes alive with flowing streams, waterfalls, and an explosion of green.

What sets this trail apart is the sense of community preserved over generations. Villagers from the surrounding hamlets still maintain the trail during harsh weather, especially in the slippery and challenging stretches, continuing a tradition of resilience and cooperation. The padar — the forested highland plains en route — offers a serene experience as one passes through dense vegetation, accompanied by the calls of forest birds and the occasional sight of wild flora and seasonal forest fruits like karvandajambhul, and bor. The cool mist, earthy scent of wet leaves, and panoramic Sahyadri views make the Supe Nal to Gopya Ghat trek not just a physical journey, but a soul-stirring immersion into nature and history.

Trekking Through Time: Supe Nal to Gopya Ghat – A Hidden Sahyadri Gem

Deep in the folds of the Sahyadri hills lies a forgotten forest trail — the Supe Nal to Gopya Ghat trek. This lesser-known route in the Rajgad region is a walk through both breathtaking natural landscapes and layers of untold history. Lush monsoon forests, narrow gorges, ancient rock formations, and the lingering silence of once-important trade paths make this trail a true hidden gem for trekkers seeking something off the beaten path.

The trek begins from the rustic village of Sangavi, surrounded by green paddy fields and Sahyadri ridges. The trail first leads into the Supe Nal — a dramatic, gorge-like mountain pass formed by nature over centuries. The descent through this narrow corridor is both thrilling and beautiful, as the dense forest closes in and the soundscape shifts to birds, rustling leaves, and flowing water. During the monsoon, the terrain is alive with small streams and waterfalls, turning the route into a misty green tunnel of wilderness.

Even today, local villagers maintain sections of this ancient trail — especially the steeper parts — a testament to their relationship with the land and its legacy. The feeling of walking on a route that once connected the coastal town of Shivthar with interior Deccan villages gives the trek an added historical depth.

The trail passes through a scenic forest plateau known as Sahyadrichi Vadi, where the air feels untouched and the flora grows wild. Seasonal fruits like karvandajambhul, and bor are found along the way, offering a true forest-foraged experience.

As the trail ascends toward Gopya Ghat, trekkers encounter the remains of the region’s historic significance — a massive rock-cut cavetwo ancient water tanks, and a weathered gadyagal (a stone surveillance point or rest stop carved into rock). These relics stand as reminders of the days when this route was one of the main connectors between regions. Though time has worn them down, their presence still inspires awe.

Once atop Gopya Ghat, the view opens into a wide, cloud-draped panorama of the surrounding Sahyadris. On clear days, the mighty forts of Rajgad and Torna can be seen standing proudly against the horizon, keeping silent watch over the hills and valleys below.

The descent on the other side of the ridge leads toward the scenic Bhatghar backwaters, with serene lake views and breezy grasslands offering a fitting, peaceful end to the trek.

What makes the Supe Nal to Gopya Ghat trek special is not just the physical trail — it's the atmosphere, the forgotten echoes of trade and travel, and the chance to walk paths once carved for survival and connection. It’s a perfect trail for monsoon lovers, history enthusiasts, or anyone seeking solitude in the Sahyadris.

No crowded peaks, no commercialization — just raw nature, rich history, and the joy of discovering something truly untouched.
