Durg–Dhakoba Trek – Into the Wilderness of Sahyadris

The Sahyadris have countless trails, each with its own story, but some remain hidden from the usual trekking crowd. The Durg–Dhakoba trek is one such trail, an experience that feels untouched, raw, and deeply connected to nature. Nestled in the Naneghat–Malshej region, this trek is not about flashy fort ruins or bustling summit crowds; it is about silence, vast plateaus, and the timeless rhythm of the mountains.

The journey begins before dawn, when trekkers arrive at a small village at the base. The air is cool, the fields are quiet, and the only sound is the rustle of trees in the dark. After a simple breakfast, the trail gradually leads into dense forest. The morning mist clings to the branches, and every step feels like entering a secret world. The climb is steady, not too steep, but long enough to test stamina. As the forest opens up, grasslands spread wide, dotted with wildflowers, and the view of distant ridges starts to unfold.

Reaching Dhakoba Peak is the reward for this effort. Standing at one of the highest points in the Junnar region, the summit feels like a world above the valleys. A vast windswept plateau stretches endlessly, and the horizon is framed by some of the most iconic Sahyadri landmarks—Naneghat, Malshej Ghat, Harishchandragad, and Jivdhan. The silence here is profound, broken only by the sound of the wind. It is a moment that lingers, as if time itself slows down at the top.

The descent begins after this pause at the summit. The sun grows stronger, the valleys brighten, and the same forests walked through in the morning now appear transformed. By late morning, the trail leads back to the village, where a traditional lunch awaits. Sitting down to this simple yet hearty meal completes the circle of the journey.

What makes the Durg–Dhakoba trek special is its rawness. There are no crowds, no shops, no distractions—just misty peaks, wild trails, and the company of nature. It is a trek for those who want to feel the Sahyadris in their purest form, where the reward is not just the view from the top but the quiet discovery of a hidden path.
