About Fireflies : There are about 2,000 firefly species. These insects often live in humid regions of Asia. Fireflies also known as "Kajwa" are indeed fascinating creatures known for their bioluminescent displays. They use their light to “talk” to other fireflies and find a mate. They have special organs under their abdomens that take in oxygen. Inside special cells, they combine the oxygen with a substance called luciferin to make light with almost no heat. They use this light, called bioluminescence, to light up the ends of their abdomen. There are indeed thousands of species worldwide, each with its own unique flashing pattern used primarily for mating purposes. In India, particularly in May and June, these enchanting insects light up the night skies, engaging in their brief but vital reproductive cycle. There average life span is about 1-2 months only.

Important : Please note that too much night time light can be harmful to wildlife, affecting their migration patterns and hunting abilities. For fireflies, light pollution interferes with their attempts to signal each other. So we need to explore and witness such gems of Nature with utmost care and precautions.

Kajwa Mahotsav can be witnessed at multiple locations in our Magical Sahyadri. Below are some must visit locations to experience this magical phenomenon ;

1. Bhandardara Fireflies Festival

Important Note

  • The sighting of fireflies is a natural phenomenon that depends on weather conditions. We can hope to have a beautiful experience of exploring nature in their presence.
  • As these events occur during the pre-monsoon period, there is a possibility of rain during our camp stay. In such instances, we will endeavor to arrange available homestays in the village. However, due to the high influx of trekkers, there may be a shortage of stay facilities, requiring trekkers to adjust and cooperate accordingly.

  • We offer tent accommodations on a triple/quad sharing basis, each equipped with ground sheets for overnight camping stays. If you find this arrangement uncomfortable, you have the option to select a twin/couple sharing tent (3-men capacity) during booking, with an additional charge of Rs. 200 per person. Please note that no arguments or requests regarding tent allotment will be entertained at the campsite.

  • The base village is situated in a remote location and faces scarcity in basic facilities such as washrooms, accommodation, network coverage, and hotels. Participants are expected to adapt and collaborate with each other and the organizers under these circumstances.
  • The road from Lonavala to the base village is off-road, and heavy rain can render it muddy and impossible for motor vehicles. In such cases, trekkers may need to walk halfway to the base village and back (approximately 5-7 km one way).
  • Due to the high volume of trekkers and limited local transportation options, there may be long queues for return transportation from the base village to Lonavala, leading to potential delays. We kindly request your patience and cooperation in this matter.

Initially constructed by the Satvahanas, this fort witnessed numerous shifts in power throughout its existence. In 1657, the esteemed ruler Shivaji Maharaj claimed control of Rajmachi Fort, along with neighboring forts, from the ruler of Bijapur, Adil Shahi.

However, in 1704, the fort fell into the hands of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, only to be reclaimed by the Marathas the following year. Subsequently, in 1713, it was entrusted to Kanhoji Angre. With the downfall of the Marathas in 1818, the British Empire asserted control over the entire Maratha region, including Rajmachi Fort.
