Overview

Aad Fort, also known as Aadgad, is an ancient hill fort situated in the Nashik district of Maharashtra, near the border of Nashik and Ahmednagar districts. Rising to an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet above sea level, the fort occupies a strategic position in the Sahyadri mountain ranges and is believed to have served primarily as a watchtower guarding the important routes connecting Sinnar, Igatpuri, and the surrounding regions. Although very little documented history of the fort survives today, its location and fortifications indicate that it was an important observation post within the network of hill forts that monitored trade routes, communication lines, and military movements across the Deccan plateau.

Spread across a vast plateau of more than 40 acres, Aad Fort preserves several remnants of its historic past, including ruined bastions, ancient gateways, rock-cut water cisterns, cave shelters, and scattered structural remains. One of the fort's most notable attractions is the natural cave housing the temple of Goddess Adubai, a locally revered deity. The fort also contains sixteen water tanks carved into the rock, a large lake, remnants of the Konkan Gate, a stone lamp pillar (Deepmal), and traces of old fortifications that highlight the engineering skills of its builders. These features suggest that the fort was designed not only for surveillance but also for sustaining a small garrison for extended periods.

The trek to Aad Fort is relatively short and accessible, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers. Two routes lead to the summit from Aadwadi village: a steep but quick ascent from Varchi Aadwadi and a longer, gradual climb from Madhali Aadwadi. The journey passes through rugged terrain, open grasslands, and rocky sections before reaching the expansive summit plateau.

Aad Fort is particularly known for its panoramic views of some of the most prominent landmarks in the region. From the top, trekkers can enjoy breathtaking vistas of Aundha Fort, Patta Fort (Vishramgad), Bitangad, Mhasoba Peak, and the majestic Kalsubai Range, the highest mountain range in Maharashtra. During the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, the surrounding landscape transforms into a lush green paradise, making the fort a rewarding destination for nature lovers, photographers, history enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike.

Despite being overshadowed by more famous forts in the region, Aad Fort remains an offbeat gem of the Sahyadris, offering a unique combination of history, archaeology, scenic beauty, and a peaceful trekking experience away from crowded tourist trails.
